A child’s first orthodontic assessment helps track tooth eruption and jaw growth at the right time.

When should the first exam take place?

It can be advisable for the first orthodontic assessment to take place around age 7. At this age, baby and permanent teeth are present together, so eruption direction, crowding and the relationship between the jaws can be assessed. If a clear problem is noticed earlier, an opinion can be sought without waiting for that age.

02

What is checked during the exam?

The number and eruption status of teeth, crowding or spacing, the relationship between the upper and lower jaw, crossbite or open bite, and facial development are examined together. Photographs or imaging records may be requested if needed.

03

Does an early exam mean treatment will start?

No. For some children, regular monitoring alone is enough. The timing of treatment is determined individually, based on how the existing problem relates to growth and dental development.
